Description

Product Overview

NOW Certified Organic Spirulina comes as a bottle of 100 tablets, each 500mg of organic spirulina. The label serving is six tablets a day — 3g of spirulina — so the bottle holds 16 servings, a little over two weeks.

The label shows the USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified marks, “Vegetarian/Vegan”, organic certification by QAI, a kosher mark and a halal mark, and says “packaged and quality tested in the USA” by NOW Foods of Bloomingdale, Illinois. The figures on this page are from the label in the product photos.

Tablets, not powder. We also sell spirulina powders from other makers; this one is the tablet form.

What Spirulina Is

Spirulina (Arthrospira) is a cyanobacterium, usually called blue-green algae, grown in water and dried. By weight it is roughly 60% protein, and it contains iron, beta-carotene, some B vitamins, GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) and a blue pigment, phycocyanin.

The catch is the amount. Six tablets give 3g — about 2g of protein, around a third of what one egg provides. It is a nutritious food in small quantity, not a concentrated source of anything.

Key Benefits — What the Evidence Says

  • A little extra protein, iron and beta-carotene — real, but small at 3g a day.
  • Blood fats — some small trials report modest improvements in cholesterol and triglycerides. The evidence is limited and inconsistent.
  • Antioxidant pigments — phycocyanin is an antioxidant in laboratory studies.
  • “Super Green, Nutrient Rich” — the label’s words. Fair for spirulina as a food; it does not replace vegetables.

Key Features

  • 500mg organic spirulina per tablet
  • 100 tablets — 16 servings of six
  • One other ingredient: silicon dioxide
  • Vegetarian/vegan; USDA Organic; Non-GMO Project Verified
  • Label: not made with yeast, wheat, gluten, soy, corn, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients

Ingredients / Specifications

Per serving of 6 tablets (from the label photo):

  • Calories — 10
  • Total carbohydrate — less than 1g
  • Protein — 2g
  • Organic spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) — 3g (3,000mg)

Other ingredient: silicon dioxide. One side of the label says the tablets contain no excipients, binders or additives, while the facts panel lists silicon dioxide, a common anti-caking agent. The panel is the fuller statement.

The label notes it is produced in a GMP facility that also processes ingredients containing the allergens above, and that natural colour variation may occur.

How to Use

  1. The label directions: take six tablets daily.
  2. Some people start with fewer tablets and build up over a week; nausea, loose stools and headache are the usual complaints when starting.
  3. Take them with water, with or without food.
  4. Stop if you get a rash, swelling or itching.

Quality Matters With Spirulina

Spirulina grown in open ponds can pick up toxins from other blue-green algae (microcystins, which can harm the liver) and heavy metals from polluted water. Buying from a maker that tests its spirulina matters more than the price. The label says this product is quality tested in the USA; it does not list the specific tests.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Adults — the label says “for adults only”.
  • Phenylketonuria (PKU) — spirulina contains phenylalanine. Avoid it.
  • Autoimmune conditions (such as lupus, multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis), or medicine that suppresses the immune system — spirulina may stimulate the immune system. Ask your doctor first.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding — the label says consult a physician.
  • Vegetarians and vegans — yes, per the label.
  • Avoid it if you are allergic to algae or seaweed.

Why Choose NOW Foods Organic Spirulina?

Certified organic spirulina from an established US maker, in tablets with a single added ingredient and a clear label — easier to measure than powder, and without the taste.

Food First

A supplement is a supplement — the name is accurate. It works best filling a genuine gap on top of an ordinary varied diet, not standing in for one.

Whole food gives you the nutrient along with the fibre and the dozens of other compounds that come with it, in amounts your body is built to handle. No capsule reproduces that. Take a supplement because your diet, your blood test or your doctor points to a specific gap — not because the packaging is persuasive.

This Is a Supplement, Not a Medicine

A dietary supplement is a food product. It is not a medicine, it has not been through the testing a medicine goes through, and it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Supplement labels use health language — “supports”, “helps maintain”, “promotes” — precisely because they are not permitted to claim treatment. Read them that way. If a listing anywhere promises that a capsule will fix a medical condition, that promise is not one the product can keep.

What a supplement can honestly do is fill a gap in your diet. That is worth something, and it is a smaller thing than most packaging implies.

Talk to a Doctor First

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before you start, particularly if you:

  • take any prescribed medicine — supplements interfere with medicines more often than people expect
  • are being treated for a heart, liver, kidney, thyroid or blood condition
  • have diabetes
  • are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • have surgery or a dental procedure coming up

Never stop or reduce a prescribed medicine in order to take a supplement instead. That is the single most dangerous thing anyone does with a product like this, and it is what the marketing language quietly invites.

About the Imported Pack

This is an imported product. The label, the dose instructions and the ingredient panel are the ones printed for the market it was made for, and the wording may differ from a locally packaged version.

Follow the dose printed on the pack itself — it is the authority on its own contents — and check the expiry date when it arrives. If anything on the label is unclear, message us before you take it and we will read it to you.

Storage

  • Keep the container tightly closed, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not store it in a bathroom. Heat and humidity break supplements down faster than anything else, and a Dhaka bathroom is the worst place in the house for them.
  • Leave the desiccant sachet in the bottle. It is there to keep moisture out, not by mistake.
  • Softgels and fish oils are best kept in a fridge in hot weather — they go rancid otherwise.
  • Keep it out of reach of children.
  • Do not use it after the expiry date, and throw it away if the capsules smell strongly off, have stuck together or changed colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is spirulina a good source of vitamin B12 for vegetarians?

No. Most of the B12 in spirulina is an inactive form the human body cannot use. Vegetarians and vegans need a proper B12 supplement or fortified food.

Why six tablets?

Each tablet is 500mg and the label serving is 3g. At that dose a bottle of 100 lasts about 16 days.

Is it halal?

The seller lists it as halal, and the label in the photos carries a halal mark. Message us if you want a closer photo of the bottle.

How do I check the pack is in date?

The expiry date is printed on the bottle or the base of the box. Check it as soon as your order arrives. If it is unreadable or close to expiry, message us and we will replace it.
