What a Shampoo Can Do About Hair Fall
Nearly every bottle in this category promises to stop hair fall, so it is worth separating the two things that phrase covers.
Breakage — hair snapping along its length from dryness, rough handling, heat or tight ties. A conditioning shampoo genuinely helps: less friction, less tangling, less snapping, and visibly more hair as a result.
Shedding from the root — hair coming out with the white bulb attached, a widening parting, a receding hairline, or a sudden heavy shed a few months after illness, childbirth, crash dieting or a change of medication. Nothing you wash out after three minutes reaches any of that. Iron and ferritin, thyroid, hormones, protein intake and stress are the usual causes, and a blood test finds them.
Buy a shampoo for a clean scalp and hair that breaks less. If hair is coming out at the root, see a doctor — most causes respond well, and the sooner they are looked at the better.
One Claim We Have Not Repeated
The seller’s description says the range reduces hair fall “by up to 10 times”. That figure comes from a manufacturer test comparing hair broken during combing after using the full system against combing unconditioned hair — which is a real measurement of a real effect, but it is about breakage during combing, not about hair falling out. It does not mean you will lose a tenth as much hair. We have left it out rather than let it be read as something it is not.
How to Use a Conditioner
- Squeeze the water out of your hair first. Conditioner cannot get into hair that is already saturated — this one step makes more difference than the product you choose.
- Apply from the mid-lengths to the ends. Keep it off the scalp; roots do not need conditioning and it is what makes hair go flat.
- Comb through with a wide-tooth comb to spread it evenly and detangle while there is slip in the hair.
- Leave it two to three minutes.
- Rinse in cool water. Cold closes the cuticle and the shine is visibly better for it.
