Description

Product Overview

Sunsilk’s anti-dandruff shampoo works on zinc pyrithione — ZPTO on the pack — which is the active behind most of the well-known anti-dandruff brands. It is an antifungal, and it targets the yeast that actually causes dandruff rather than simply washing the flakes away.

The formula is enriched with vitamins so it does not leave hair feeling stripped, which is the usual complaint about anti-dandruff shampoos. 300ml bottle, imported from Thailand.

What Dandruff Actually Is

Worth knowing, because it changes what you should expect from any bottle.

Dandruff is not caused by a dry scalp and it is not caused by poor hygiene — the two things people most often assume, and both lead to the wrong response. It is usually a reaction to Malassezia, a yeast that lives on everyone’s skin. Some people’s scalps react to it by shedding skin faster than normal, and that shedding is the flakes.

Because the yeast never leaves, dandruff is managed rather than cured. A good anti-dandruff shampoo keeps it down for as long as you keep using it, and it comes back weeks after you stop. That is not the product failing; that is how the condition works. Keep a maintenance wash once a week or once a fortnight even when the scalp is clear.

If flaking is heavy, the scalp is red and sore, or it spreads to the eyebrows, the sides of the nose or the chest, that is seborrhoeic dermatitis and worth a doctor’s attention rather than another shampoo.

How to Wash Hair Properly

  1. Wet the hair thoroughly first. Shampoo on half-wet hair does not spread and does not lather.
  2. Put the shampoo on the scalp, not on the length. The scalp is where the oil and dirt are; the ends get cleaned by the suds running down and that is enough.
  3. Massage with the pads of the fingers, never the nails, for a minute or so.
  4. Rinse until the water runs completely clear. Under-rinsing leaves residue that dulls hair and irritates the scalp.
  5. A second, shorter lather if the hair was oiled or heavily product-laden. Otherwise one is enough.
  6. Condition the mid-lengths and ends only, then rinse in cool water.

Getting the Most From It

One thing makes more difference than anything else: leave it on. Lather it into the scalp and give it two to three minutes before rinsing. Zinc pyrithione needs contact time with the skin to work, and a shampoo washed straight off is doing almost nothing. Most people who say an anti-dandruff shampoo did not work for them were not leaving it on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use it every day?

Yes, this is a cosmetic-strength formula and daily use is fine. Two or three times a week is enough for most people, with an ordinary shampoo in between.

When should I move to something stronger?

If four weeks of consistent use has not settled the flaking, try a ketoconazole shampoo. If the scalp is red, sore or weeping, see a doctor instead.

Will it suit my hair type?

Most shampoos suit most hair. The differences that matter are how strongly it cleans and how much it conditions: fine or oily hair wants a lighter wash, dry or coarse hair wants a richer one. Coloured and chemically treated hair does best with sulfate-free.

How should I store it?

Somewhere cool and dry with the cap closed. A shelf away from the shower spray is better than one in it — constant heat and steam shorten the life of any formula.
