Description

Product Overview

Tata 1mg Cod Liver Oil provides 300mg of cod liver (fish) oil in each enteric-coated soft gelatin capsule, in a bottle of 100 capsules. It is marketed by Tata 1mg Healthcare Solutions Pvt. Ltd., New Delhi, and made by Maxcure Nutravedics Limited in Haridwar, India. The label calls it a nutraceutical for adults and says “not for medicinal use”.

The front label describes it as a natural source of EPA and DHA, non-GMO and with no fish odour. The figures on this page come from the label photos.

What the Label Does Not Tell You

Cod liver oil naturally contains omega-3 fats (EPA and DHA) and vitamins A and D, and the maker’s graphics say so. The label gives no amount for any of them — only 300mg of oil per capsule. EPA and DHA are only part of that 300mg, so the omega-3 in each capsule is small. If you need a known amount of vitamin D or omega-3, choose a product that states it. Message us if you want us to check the bottle we hold.

Key Benefits

  • Omega-3 (EPA and DHA) contribute to normal heart and brain function at adequate intakes — about 250-500mg of EPA plus DHA a day is the usual target, which oily fish twice a week provides.
  • Vitamin A contributes to normal vision, skin and immune function.
  • Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium for normal bones and teeth.
  • Enteric coating — the capsule is designed to open in the intestine rather than the stomach, which usually means fewer fishy burps.

What the Listing Claims, and What Is Known

  • “May help reduce joint pain” — omega-3 in gram amounts eases joint stiffness a little in some people with inflammatory arthritis. A 300mg capsule of cod liver oil is far below that. Joint pain needs a doctor’s assessment.
  • “May help in managing cholesterol levels” — omega-3 lowers triglycerides only at several grams of EPA and DHA a day, and it does not lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Do not use it in place of cholesterol medicine.
  • “Supports heart, brain, joint and vision health” — omega-3 and vitamin A have normal roles in these at adequate intakes. That is not the same as protecting you from heart disease or eye disease.
  • “Maintain the immune system” — vitamins A and D contribute to normal immune function; the amounts here are not stated.

Vitamin A and Pregnancy

  • Cod liver oil contains preformed vitamin A (retinol). High-dose vitamin A causes birth defects, and this label does not say how much each capsule contains. If you are pregnant or could become pregnant, do not take it without your doctor.
  • Vitamins A and D are fat-soluble and build up in the body. Do not take it with a multivitamin, another fish liver oil or a vitamin A or D supplement without checking the total with a pharmacist.
  • The label asks pregnant or breastfeeding women, children and anyone with a medical condition to consult a health professional before use.

Important — Bleeding Risk

Omega-3 oils thin the blood slightly. That is usually harmless on its own, but it matters if you are also taking something that does the same thing.

  • Do not take it alongside warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel or any other blood thinner without asking your doctor. The effects add up.
  • Tell your surgeon or dentist that you take it, and expect to be asked to stop about two weeks before any operation.
  • Stop and get medical advice if you notice unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or bleeding that takes longer than normal to stop.

Fish and Soy Allergy

The label says contains fish and soy: the oil is from cod liver, and refined soya oil is used as the carrier. Do not take it if you are allergic to fish or soy. The capsule is gelatin, so it is not vegetarian; the gelatin source and halal status are not stated.

Key Features

  • 300mg cod liver (fish) oil per capsule
  • 100 enteric-coated soft gelatin capsules
  • Natural source of EPA, DHA and vitamins A and D (amounts not stated)
  • Non-GMO and “no fish odour”, as printed on the front label
  • Made in India for Tata 1mg; maker and marketer FSSAI-licensed

Ingredients / Specifications

Per capsule (0.57g), from the nutrition panel in the label photo: energy 3.46kcal; protein 0.04g; carbohydrate 0.07g (sugars 0g); total fat 0.32g, of which saturated fat 0.06g and trans fat 0g; cholesterol 0mg; sodium 0mg; polyols 0.07g. Cod liver (fish oil) 300mg. 100 servings per container.

Ingredients, as printed: methacrylic acid, cod liver (fish oil), capsule shell (gelatin), humectants (INS 422 & INS 420(ii)), purified water, vehicle (refined soya oil), foam stabiliser (INS 1505), preservative (INS 218), antioxidant (INS 320) and artificial flavouring substance (ethyl vanillin).

The label notes that polyols may have a laxative effect. Country of origin: India. Batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates are printed on the bottom of the bottle.

How to Use

  1. Take one capsule two to three times a day, or as your health professional suggests — the label’s recommended usage level. Do not exceed it.
  2. Swallow it whole. Do not chew, crush or press the capsule; that damages the enteric coating.
  3. Taking it with a meal is usually gentler on the stomach.
  4. At two to three a day, a bottle lasts about five to seven weeks.

Who Is It Suitable For?

  • Adults who eat little oily fish and want a low-dose cod liver oil. The label says it is for adults.
  • Not in pregnancy, or if you could become pregnant, without your doctor — because of the vitamin A.
  • Not for children without a doctor.
  • Not for anyone with a fish or soy allergy, or on blood thinners, without medical advice.
  • Not suitable for vegetarians — fish oil in a gelatin capsule.

Why Choose Tata 1mg Cod Liver Oil?

A low-dose cod liver oil from a known Indian health brand, with full maker and marketer details on the label and an enteric coating to cut fishy aftertaste. If you mainly want omega-3, a fish oil that states its EPA and DHA content is the better buy.

This Is a Supplement, Not a Medicine

A dietary supplement is a food product. It is not a medicine, it has not been through the testing a medicine goes through, and it does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Supplement labels use health language — “supports”, “helps maintain”, “promotes” — precisely because they are not permitted to claim treatment. Read them that way. If a listing anywhere promises that a capsule will fix a medical condition, that promise is not one the product can keep.

What a supplement can honestly do is fill a gap in your diet. That is worth something, and it is a smaller thing than most packaging implies.

Talk to a Doctor First

Speak to a doctor or pharmacist before you start, particularly if you:

  • take any prescribed medicine — supplements interfere with medicines more often than people expect
  • are being treated for a heart, liver, kidney, thyroid or blood condition
  • have diabetes
  • are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • have surgery or a dental procedure coming up

Never stop or reduce a prescribed medicine in order to take a supplement instead. That is the single most dangerous thing anyone does with a product like this, and it is what the marketing language quietly invites.

Do Not Exceed the Stated Dose

Follow the dose printed on the pack. More is not better with supplements — for several of them, more is worse.

  • Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E and K) build up in the body rather than being flushed out. A high daily dose taken for months can accumulate to a harmful level.
  • Taking two products that both contain the same vitamin is an easy way to double a dose without noticing. Check every label you are taking.
  • Stop and see a doctor if you get nausea, stomach pain, unusual bruising, a rash, or anything else new after starting.

About the Imported Pack

This is an imported product. The label, the dose instructions and the ingredient panel are the ones printed for the market it was made for, and the wording may differ from a locally packaged version.

Follow the dose printed on the pack itself — it is the authority on its own contents — and check the expiry date when it arrives. If anything on the label is unclear, message us before you take it and we will read it to you.

Storage

  • Keep the container tightly closed, somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight.
  • Do not store it in a bathroom. Heat and humidity break supplements down faster than anything else, and a Dhaka bathroom is the worst place in the house for them.
  • Leave the desiccant sachet in the bottle. It is there to keep moisture out, not by mistake.
  • Softgels and fish oils are best kept in a fridge in hot weather — they go rancid otherwise.
  • Keep it out of reach of children.
  • Do not use it after the expiry date, and throw it away if the capsules smell strongly off, have stuck together or changed colour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much vitamin A and D is in each capsule?

The label does not say. It describes the oil as a natural source of both but gives no amounts. Message us and we will check the bottle we hold.

Is cod liver oil the same as fish oil?

No. Cod liver oil comes from the liver and carries vitamins A and D as well as omega-3; fish oil comes from the body of oily fish and is mainly omega-3.

Can I take it in pregnancy?

Only with your doctor’s agreement, because of the vitamin A.

How do I check the pack is in date?

The expiry date is printed on the bottle or the base of the box. Check it as soon as your order arrives. If it is unreadable or close to expiry, message us and we will replace it.
