Description

Product Overview

A wide-tooth comb cut from natural wood. The gaps between the teeth are wide enough to work through a tangle without forcing it, and the tips are rounded so they slide along the scalp rather than scratching it.

The reason to choose wood over plastic comes down to two things. Wood does not build a static charge, so hair lies flat after combing instead of flying away. And a wooden tooth is shaped and sanded, where a plastic one has a moulding seam running along it — an invisible ridge that catches and shreds the cuticle a little more with every stroke.

Comb From the Ends Up

The single habit that saves the most hair. Start at the last few inches, work the tangles out there, then move up an inch and repeat, and again, until you can draw the comb from root to tip without resistance. Starting at the roots gathers every tangle in the hair into one knot at the bottom and then drags it out by force.

Be especially careful when hair is wet. Wet hair stretches under tension and snaps far more easily than dry hair — use a wide-tooth comb, never a fine one, and never a brush.

Why a Wide Tooth for Wet Hair

Wet hair can stretch by up to a third of its length before it breaks, and once stretched it does not fully recover. A fine comb dragged through wet hair puts every one of those strands under tension at once. A wide-tooth comb separates the hair into manageable groups and lets a tangle come apart rather than tear. If you own one comb, this is the one worth owning.

Looking After a Wooden Comb

  • Do not soak it. Wood swells, splits and the teeth roughen — a rough tooth tears hair.
  • Clean it by pulling out the loose hair and wiping the teeth with a barely damp cloth, then drying it straight away.
  • A drop of coconut or olive oil rubbed in every couple of months keeps the wood from drying out and cracking.
  • Run a fingertip along the teeth now and then. If one has chipped or gone rough, sand it smooth or retire the comb.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it good for curly hair?

It is the standard tool for curly hair. Detangle in the shower with conditioner in, working from the ends, and the curl pattern stays intact.

Can I use it to spread hair oil?

Yes, and it does it well. Apply the oil to the scalp and length, then comb through to distribute it evenly. Wipe the comb clean afterwards.

How long will it last?

Years, if you keep it dry and oil the wood occasionally. Wooden combs are usually retired because a tooth chips, not because they wear out.
